About Us
The Department of Agriculture, Irrigation, Livestock, Fisheries and Co-operatives Development (DAILFD) is created under the County Government Act of 2012 (Sec 46) and assigned functional responsibility by H.E the Governor.The key role of DAILFCD is the provision and facilitation of extension services to farmers in the county. The agriculture sector is a key driver of the county economy contributing 78% of the total household income in Makueni County. A bout 79% of the total 244,669 households in the county are involved in agricultural production with 74% involved in crop farming while 65% are involved in livestock farming. The main crops grown in the county include maize, green grams, mango, avocado and citrus while the main livestock reared include indigenous poultry, goats and sheep and cattle.
Our Mandate
The mandate of the department is to promote and facilitate production of food and agricultural raw materials for food security and incomes; advance agro-based industries and agricultural exports and enhance sustainable use of land resources as a basis for agricultural enterprises.
Our Functions
Specific Functions For Agriculture And Irrigation Section
- Formulation and review of county agricultural policies and regulatory frameworks
- Providing farmer training on pre-harvest and post-harvest handling of crops and produce
- Collection and management of data and information on crops and food security
- Promotion of farming as a business including commercialization of value chains
- Creating mechanisms for increased access to affordable agricultural inputs
- Disseminating information on market prices to farmers
- Survey and design of water and soil conservation structures and technologies
- Provisional Agricultural mechanization services
- Agricultural land use planning including farm planning and layout activities
- Promotion of agroforestry and soil conservation
- Irrigation development, management and policy development
- Collaboration with various stakeholders in development of crop technologies
- Formulation and review of county policies and programmes for livestock production, animal health and fisheries
- Development and coordination of livestock and fisheries projects and programmes
- Coordinate livestock extension services and linkages to markets
- Development and management of livestock and fisheries data and information
- Development of aquaculture infrastructure
- Rangeland resource management and fodder development
- Promotion of commercially oriented livestock production and value addition
- Promote agribusiness and livestock chain development
- Livestock disease control including vaccination, quarantines, livestock movement and awareness creation on zoonotic diseases
- Provision of veterinary laboratory services
- Provision of veterinary public health services including regulation of slaughter points and safety of food of animal origin and stock yards.
