Makueni Men Football team weathered a tough challenge from Wajir to grab a point in a 1-1 draw in the opening match of group C at Malindi High School.
The game was a display of the raw talent from Makueni that Governor Mutula Kilonzo Jr has pledged to nurture for posterity.
Makueni will face Kajiado and Embu in their next fixtures of the group.
Makueni leads procession matches during the official opening of the Kenya Inter-county Sports Association (KYISA) Games at Pwani University on Monday.
County Executive Committee Member for Sports Eng. Peter Mumo led the Makueni team.
Makueni is the defending champion in Ladies Football and Men Basketball.

Makueni Men Football Team will play their KYISA opening game against Wajir on Tuesday in Pool C that also features Kajiado County.
The women team will square it out with Siaya on Tuesday before meeting Nyeri on Wednesday.
In Men Volleyball, Makueni has been pooled with Kilifi, Siaya, Nakuru and Nyeri. The Lady volleyballers have been drawn together with Siaya, Kilifi and Nyeri.
The games are taking place in Malindi, Kilifi County.
Governor Mutula Kilonzo Jnr on Thursday met a delegation of the Presidential Economic Transformation Secretariat led by the head, Augustine Cheruiyot, that paid him a courtesy call in Wote.
Discussions centered on strategies to make Makueni a centre of excellence for fruits production. Development of the mango value chain for both local and export markets was addressed in detail.
Talks with the Agriculture and Food Authority, through Horticultural Crops Directorate (HCD), are at an advanced stage for establishment of a fruits hot water treatment facility in Makueni to curb the menace of fruitfly.
The team also explored key areas of livestock production in the county.
While addressing the Kenya Secondary School Heads Association (KESSHA) members in their ongoing conference, the CECM ICT, Education and Internship has lauded them for the integral part they play in every child’s life and in shaping the nation at large.
Centering her message on Digital Learning, Ms Muli delved into the benefits of embracing technology in the school curriculum.
These include providing a platform for teachers to personalize instructions for each student needs, creating ease in tracking students learning progress via adaptive learning software and data analytics as parents experience greater visibility into their children’s
learning journey at the click of a button through accessing progress reports and
learning platforms.
The County Executive Committee Member added that digital learning is cost effective thus once embraced will reduce textbooks budgetary allocation as all learnning resources are available online. Therefore, education will be accessible to all at affordable rates and will expose learners to different cultures hence broadening their perspectives on education and life in general.
While speaking in the same forum, KESSHA chairman has expressed the union’s gratitude for the shared strategic partnership with the county government which ensured needy students received both bursaries and scholarships.
Present in the two day conference which closed this evening bringing 300 attendees on board was TSC officials and the County director in education.
A delegation from the National Technical Advisory Committee for National Agricultural and Rural Inclusive Growth Project (NARIGP) has lauded Makueni for Successful Implementation of the project, saying that the county is ready to transition to the new project, National Agricultural Value Chain Development Project(NAVCDP).
NAVCDP is a Government of Kenya project with co-funding from the World Bank and the National Government. The project will be implemented in 32 counties, Makueni among them, targeting to increase market participation and value addition for farmers in select value chains.
James Muturi who led the team said that NAVCDP will build on the strong foundation laid by NARIGP emphasizing the importance of the assessment.
Muturi was wowed by some of the interventions to farmers which have led to improved livelihoods and agricultural productivity.
The team, hosted by Makueni Agriculture and Livestock Joyce Mutua on Tuesday visited Kilombo dam in Kiima-Kiu Kalanzoni Ward, Kwa Nguni Watershed Sustainable Land Management project in Kako-Waia Ward and Kilome Farmers Sacco.
The Department of Health Services in Makueni County collaborated with stakeholders in a workshop on Monday for the Development and Delivery of Biofortified Crops at Scale (DDBIO) project.
The initiative, jointly convened by the International Potato Center (CIP), World Food Programme (WFP), and Makueni’s health and agriculture dockets, aims to address maternal and child nutrition outcomes.
Implemented in Makueni, Tana River, and Garissa, the program focuses on improving nutrition through various interventions, including the distribution of Orange Fleshed Sweet Potato (OFSP) vines to agro-pastoral households, aiming to alleviate maternal and child undernutrition.
Dr. Mwatha, the Ag. Director for Health Services, emphasized the importance of a multi-faceted approach to nutrition and the necessary interventions during the workshop.
Attendees included Chalmers Mulwa, a Social Scientist, Dorcas Amunga, a Nutritionist, Leonard Kirui, a Senior Manager, Lucy Mwaura, a Food Scientist, and others from the International Potato Center.
Makueni and Kibwezi West Sub-counties are officially the champions of the MKJ SUPA CUP that came to close on Sunday at Unoa grounds in Wote.
Makueni won both Men and women football, Women 5 on 5 Basketball, and Beach Handball Men. Kibwezi West won the Men 5 on 5 Basketball, and the 3 on 3 Basketball both men and Women.
Winners will represent Makueni County in the Kenya Inter-county Sports Association (KYISA) Games in Kilifi scheduled for 14th- 21st April 2024
The Department of Agriculture and Livestock has launched a campaign to completely eliminate rabies in Makueni.
The campaign targets to vaccinate 40,000 dogs across 17 wards in the county.
The launch was officiated by Makueni Deputy Governor Lucy Mulili on Friday at Kyangoma in Mbooni Sub- County.
She was accompanied by Agriculture Executive Joyce Mutua, Livestock Chief Officer Japheth Kiminza and Mbooni Ward Member of County Assembly Alexander Mulemba
