𝗪𝗼𝘁𝗲, 𝗢𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲- The government of Makueni County has concluded a week-long public participation exercise on the advancement of the Makueni Public Transport Policy, with consultations held across all sub-counties to gather public views on enhancing passenger safety, curbing harassment, promoting gender inclusivity and improving accessibility for persons with disabilities.

The exercise, spearheaded by the Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Public Works, Housing and Energy in partnership with Flone Initiative, marks a key step towards strengthening the implementation of the policy and ensuring a safer, more inclusive and accountable public transport system in the county.

The week-long exercise provided a platform for stakeholders and members of the public to share their experiences, identify gaps in the public transport sector and propose measures to improve service delivery and passenger protection across the county.

Speaking during the concluding public participation forum in Wote, Makueni Deputy Governor Lucy Mulili emphasized the importance of incorporating public views into the policy and ensuring that the commitments made translate into practical measures that safeguard commuters.

She noted that the proposed public transport policy tracker would strengthen accountability, monitor progress on gender commitments and provide a framework for following up on issues raised during the consultations. She underscored the need for well-lit bus parks, CCTV surveillance and clear transport regulations to improve security and protect commuters from harassment.

As the consultations concluded, the Deputy Governor called on transport operators, enforcement agencies, county officials and the public to take collective responsibility for advancing the policy, emphasizing that its success would depend on sustained collaboration, accountability and commitment to its implementation.

The exercise brought together key county officials, including the County Executive Committee Member for Transport, Eng. Peter Mumo,Chief Officers David Ndolo and Catherine Syombua, among other leaders.
