Governor Mutula calls for greater participation of youth in entrepreneurship

H.E Governor Mutula Kilonzo Jr on Monday graced the Makueni youth dialogue and mentorship event that brought together 15 youths per ward from all over the county.
 
 
The governor used the forum to urge for youth participation in economic affairs through entrepreneurship.
He said the government was keen in creating a conducive environment that will unlock the potential for the County’s youth, to enable them to fully participate in development.
The County had also engaged different sector leads and youths who have excelled in various business ventures to speak during the forum.
 
 
 

Governor Mutula launches agrivoltaic research site in Kibwezi for renewable energy while empowering local farmers

A partnership between Makueni and the Kasser Joint Institute for Food, Water, and Energy Security, a partnership of Jewish National Fund – USA, the University of Arizona and the Arava Valley in Israel has formally marked a start of an Agrivoltaic research site at St.Patrick’s Ngomano Primary School, Lower Masimbani- Kibwezi.
This solar-garden project once complete will provide a co-development in Masimbani region with the use of the same area of land for both solar power and empowering the local farmers through agriculture.
During the inauguration ceremony whose climax foresaw signing of an MOU with the community, Governor Mutula Kilonzo Jr hailed the idea of growing crops under solar PV panels as a way of addressing food security in the region that receives unreliable rainfall.
Eitan Hatzor who represented the Israel ambassador during the launch and Tania Pons, from Kasser Joint Institute termed the establishment of the new site in Makueni as a turning-point for building capacity for food, water and energy for the local community.
 

Mbooni development tour

H.E. governor Mutula Kilonzo Jr on Monday evening completed a day long development tour of Kisau kiteta by visiting Mulima dam and addressing an open baraza at Kikima market in the neighboring Mbooni West .
In 2023/2024 FY, the county has set aside a budget for desilting and repairing water pipes in the Mulima dam to ensure enough water supply through the Mbooni Water and Sanitation Company (MBONWASCO).
In a stop over at Kikima, the governor took a walk around the shopping centre, having conversations with traders on some of their challenges they have been facing in the market.
He assured them of his government’s commitment for an enabling business environment.
Governor Mutula Kilonzo Jr was accompanied by Deputy Governor Lucy Mulili, CECMs, several MCAs led by Majority leader Kyalo Mumo among others.

H.E Governor Mutula Kilonzo Jr will be Commissioning the new Tawa maternity and newborn unit for improved maternal health and child well-being. The hospital has been build by the County in partnership with Safaricom PLC .

Over 15,000 residents from Mbooni East, Makueni County will now benefit from improved health services following the commissioning of Tawa sub-County Hospital maternal and child health unit, thanks to collaboration between the Safaricom Mpesa Foundation and the County Government of Makueni.
The County and the foundation partnership has seen the facility get constructed and equipped to a tune of sh. 32 Million.
The health facility will be crucial in reducing referrals and bringing services closer to residents of Mbooni sub-County. It will also contribute to reducing maternal and child health mortality.

Governor Mutula meets Kitui Teachers’ Sacco leadership, discusses areas of collaboration

Board members from Kitui Teachers’ Sacco led by Bishop Augustus Munuve (chair), Tonny Kilonzo, (Vice Chair), Cyrus Mutinda (Deputy CEO-Finance) accompanied by CECM: Gender, children, Youth, Sports and Social Services, Nicholas Nzioka, paid a courtesy call on the Governor, H.E Mutula Kilonzo Junior to discuss areas of collaboration.
The Sacco leadership promised to partner with the County Government in the cooperative movement, corporate social responsibility.
The Sacco which has branches in Wote and Makindu has been supportive in matters education by offering sponsorship to bright students from poor backgrounds.

Commission on Revenue Allocation holds a meeting with governor Mutula while on devolution impact assessment tour

The Commission on Revenue Allocation, CRA, which is assessing the impact of devolution to service delivery since inception of devolution across the 47 counties has today morning held a meeting with H.E Governor Mutula Kilonzo Jr .
The Commission which has been in Makueni county in the last 3 days has visited various projects fully funded by the county government across subcounties to determine the extent service delivery has impacted the citizens in the County.
The team led by Commissioner Hadija Juma and the CEO James Katule held wide discussions with the Governor, CECs to discuss the impact across education, health, urban planning, roads, agriculture and water.

Walking for mental health

#Power of Humanity walk has been launched in Wote, spearheaded by Kenya Red Cross Society under H.E Governor Mutula Kilonzo Jr , branch patron, with the aim of raising funds to address mental health issues.
The Governor affirms the government’s commitment to addressing mental health problems after emerging that an estimated 3000 adults in Makueni county had severe thoughts of suicide in the year 2020/2021/2022 while 700 made suicide plans and 500 attempted suicides.
 
 

Makueni Dairy and Apiculture Farmers to Receive Support from the World Bank

Makueni farmers have prioritized the dairy and apiculture(bee-keeping) value chains to receive financial support for market access and value addition under the National Agricultural Value Chain Development Project (NAVCDP)-a new World Bank-funded project.
In the just concluded 2-day public participation process to select two additional value chains to be considered for funding by the World Bank, dairy and apiculture value chains were adopted by the farmers.
 
NAVCDP is a scale-up of NARIGP, and its overall goal is to increase market participation and enhance value addition for smallholder farmers who are either in transition or have transitioned from subsistence to commercial farming.
 
According to the majority of the farmers, in a list of seven value chains, dairy and apiculture have the highest growth potential in both domestic and export markets. The value chains also have the highest potential for expansion in productivity in the county.
 
Other criteria for value chain selection included the potential for inclusivity of the vulnerable groups and nutrition sensitivity.
 
The countywide public participation exercise was spearheaded by the County Department of Agriculture, Irrigation, Livestock, Fisheries, and Cooperative Development.

H.E. Governor Mutula Kilonzo Jr on Thursday evening appeared before senate County Public Investments and Special Funds Committee to respond to auditor General’s report for the years 2018/2019, 2019/2020, and 2020/2021 surrounding three Makueni water companies: Mbooni Water and Sanitation Company (MBONWASCO), Wote Water and Sewerage Company (WOWASCO) and Kibwezi Makindu Water and Sanitation Company (KIBMAWASCO).
The senator Godfrey Osotsi led committee heard from the governor how the county had laid down various measures of ensuring the companies run on profitability and enough water is supplied to locals.
1. Intensified patrols to reduce water infrastructure vandalism
2. Automation to bring sanity in water sector through smart metres supported by Safaricom
3. Operationalization of various water projects for increased water volumes:
I) Operationalization of Athi Kalawa water project.
Ii) Athi-Tunguni to Kilema Hill water project
Iii) desilting and repair of pipes in Mulima earth dam .
