COUNTY LAUNCHES FORUM TO COMBAT NEONATAL DEATHS AND DISPEL HARMFUL HEALTH MYTHS

Healthcare workers from Level 2 and 3 health facilities are gathering at the One Mother and Child Hospital for a sensitization forum aimed at reducing neonatal deaths in the county.

The forum also seeks to address and dispel harmful myths surrounding unsafe health practices, such as the dangerous tradition of gum cutting, in an effort to promote healthier health-seeking behaviors.

The five-day forum was officially inaugurated by Deputy Governor Lucy Mulili and County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Health, Joyce Mutua.

As part of its commitment to improving maternal and child health, the Department is implementing a range of initiatives, including neonatal death audits, comprehensive capacity-building programs for healthcare workers, and the weekly Maternal Perinatal Death Surveillance and Response (MPDSR) system .

This is to track and address preventable deaths. These efforts are part of a broader strategy to foster change and reduce neonatal mortality rates across the county.

COUNTY, KUCO SIGN DEAL AS RETURN-TO-WORK IMPLEMENTATION IMPROVES

The CECM in charge of Health Services Joyce Mutua on Monday held talks with both representatives from the national and branch officials the Kenya Union of Clinical Officers represented by the national secretary General of KUCO George Kibore and chairman Peterson Wachira to assess the progress of the return to work formula for clinical officers.

Mutua who was accompanied by the departmental Chief Officers’ Harvey Mulei (Human Resource) and Irene Makau (Health Services) noted that the previous week, they held talks with the Kenya Civil Servants to deliberate on similar issues affecting the rest of the cadres within the department of health services.

According to Mulei, the Kenya Union of Clinical Officers had previously rated the implementation of the return to work formula to about 60% and on Monday the officials commended the county for improving on the implementation of the same.

The meeting resulted to an agreement that was cosigned between the union officials and the CECM Joyce Mutua as well as Dr. Harvey Mulei.

Early next week, the department will also host the Kenya Union of Nurses and Midwives to discuss issues relating to their members.

County in collaboration with KCB Bank donates food stuffs to children homes

Deputy Governor Lucy Mulili on Thursday led a food donation drive at Kikumini primary school small home, Salama Kenya Baptist children’s home and Tumbuni community centre for children with special needs as a way of supporting meal expenses of special needs children.
Mulili thanked the management of the institutions for creating a world of equal opportunities for children with intellectual impairment among other disabilities.
At Tumbuni, the school provides the children with education and trainings such as weaving based on the child’s aptitude, intelligence and the type and extend of their disability.
The food stuffs donated include: baking flour, cooking oil, maize flour, rice, and beans, thanks to Kenya Commercial Bank (KCB).

COUNTY HEALTH DEPARTMENT VALIDATES DRAFT FOOD AND NUTRITION POLICY

The Department of Health Services on Monday held a multi-sectoral forum at Kusyombunguo Hotel to validate a draft Food and Nutrition Policy aimed at enhancing food security and improving community well-being.

The multi-sectoral framework seeks to strengthen food and nutrition security in the County while promoting social development and overall public health.

Additionally, it provides a strategic response to the County’s unique food and nutrition challenges by identifying key factors contributing to malnutrition.

Among those who attended was Deputy Governor Lucy Mulili, ECMs and officials from departments of Health Services, Agriculture, Lands, Finance, Gender, Devolution, County Attorney and a host of members of the County Assembly.

The initiative is receiving both technical and financial support from Nutrition International.


County Government, Residents Consult on the Makueni Agricultural Training Centre Bill

Hundreds of Makueni residents on Monday thronged to various designated venues across the county for public participation for the Makueni draft Agricultural Training Centre (ATC) Bill.

The purpose of the public participation is to gather input and feedback from residents in order to shape the legal framework for the establishment and operation of the ATC Centre. This ensures that the centre aligns with the needs and aspirations of the local community.

The Centre aims to provide specialized and high-quality agricultural education, training, and related services, and will play a pivotal role in enhancing agricultural knowledge and skills among the community, potentially contributing to local agricultural development.

The two-day exercise organized at the ward level aimed to involve as many community members as possible. This approach helps ensure that a diverse range of perspectives is taken into account.The consultation process is being spearheaded by top county officials led by the County Agriculture Executive Joyce Mutua.

County Government Keen on Commercial Beekeeping

Makueni Deputy governor Adelina Mwau on Wednesday distributed beekeeping equipment to farmers in Kibwezi and Kathonzweni as county government turns focus on commercial honey harvesting.

Mwau said the county is capable of high honey production adding that the government is going to work with farmers to ensure they make the best out of their potentials.

She said honey is highly marketable both locally and internationally and that Makueni being largely semi-arid with vast land populated with vegetation ideal for beekeeping could not be left behind.

“At the moment we have set aside two million shillings this financial year as initial support for bee keeping initiatives,” Mwau said.

She said bee keepers in Makueni county have also benefited from support from partners who are supporting trainings, workshops and equipment donations to farmers.

Mwau distributed several catcher boxes, langstroths, harvesting kits, industrial seal liners, hot air guns, cup sealing machines, beehives amongst others to the farmers.

“We have also sponsored several beekeeping farmers for benchmarking in Kitui, Embu and Baringo counties who are now training the rest,” she added.

COUNTY FIRST LADY LAUNCHES BREAST AND CERVICAL CANCER SCREENING INITIATIVE.

County First Lady Anita Mutula officially launched breast and cervical cancer screening initiative in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month at the Mother and Child Hospital in Wote on Wednesday.

Leading the effort to promote early detection and prevention, Anita is advocating for free screening services for both breast and cervical cancer, aiming to increase access to life-saving care for the community.

During her address, Anita noted the alarming statistics from the Makueni Referral Hospital’s Empower Clinic, where 70.2% of cancer patients are diagnosed at stage 4 and an additional 23.5% at stage 3.

She emphasized the need for routine screenings, stating that regular check-ups for both men and women are essential in addressing these rising cancer challenges and fostering a culture of early detection.

The First Lady also expressed concern about the high prevalence of prostate cancer found among men during a recent medical camp, calling attention to the need for focused awareness and intervention.

Since its establishment, the Empower Clinic has served over 1,000 patients, offering vital support and treatment.

At the launch, cancer survivors Rose Munini and Nicholas Musyoka shared their journey with breast and prostate cancer, respectively, expressing gratitude for the treatment received at the empower clinic, which has brought them into remission.

The First Lady was joined by key partners supporting the cancer clinic, including Savanna Informatics Global Health,Roche-Kenya, the National Cancer Institute, and several members of the County Assembly, Chief Officers Dr.Stephen Ndolo,Dr.Harvey Mulei,Felistus Mutune and other county staff.

COUNTY FIRST LADY ANITA MUTULA HAS COMMISSIONED MAKUENI’S 308TH ECDE CLASS AT KWA KYAI PRIMARY SCHOOL IN KIKUMBULYU SOUTH WARD.

County First Lady Anita Mutula has commissioned Makueni’s 308th ECDE class at Kwa Kyai Primary School in Kikumbulyu South Ward. Her Foundation [Anita Mbinya Foundation] has also donated 1,000 kiddie chairs and 125 tables to be distributed to other 30 ECDE centres across the county.

The donation is courtesy of a partnership with Lapfund and Moran Publishers as the First Lady strives to complement Makueni County Government’s development efforts through her network of partners.

While commissioning the Early Childhood Development Education (ECDE) classroom today, H. E Anita Mutula has emphasized the need to have water harvesting facilities for every model ECDE class constructed.

CECM Education, ICT, and Internship confirmed that all ECDE classes have and will continue to boast customized infrastructure for the young learners’ needs and fulfill the governor’s promise that ECDE classes will be the best in each school they are put up.
