𝗡𝗮𝗶𝗿𝗼𝗯𝗶,𝟰𝘁𝗵 𝗡𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿 -Makueni County is set to accelerate its clean cooking agenda through a new partnership with the Building Climate Resilience with the Urban Poor (BCRUP) programme, building on existing county policies, investments and household clean energy interventions.

Governor Mutula Kilonzo Jr led a consultative meeting with a delegation led by Benson Ireri, Head of the Clean Cooking Delivery Unit (CCDU), Office of the Special Envoy on Climate Change (OSECC), alongside representatives of UN-Habitat and BCRUP, to advance plans to position Makueni as a demonstration county for institutional clean cooking.

The programme will strengthen the county’s ongoing transition from firewood to cleaner energy.

The initiative builds on the County Energy Plan 2023–2032 and the County Energy Policy 2025.

Governor Mutula noted that reliance on firewood contributes to respiratory illnesses, stressing the need to expand access to cleaner cooking technologies. He also highlighted opportunities for the county to benefit from carbon credit financing, citing the potential of natural assets such as the Kyulu Hills.

The partnership will support investment planning, technical capacity building and the development of a county-level carbon financing framework to sustain the clean cooking transition.

The meeting agreed on priority interventions, institutional responsibilities, designated focal persons and an implementation roadmap.

The collaboration is expected to give fresh impetus to Makueni’s existing clean energy agenda while positioning the county as a Centre of Excellence for institutional clean cooking and climate resilience.
