MACHAKOS GOVERNOR APPLAUDS MAKUENI’S INNOVATIVE EXHIBITS AT REGIONAL SHOW.

Machakos Governor Wavinya Ndeti on Friday  visited Makueni’s booth during the ongoing South Eastern Kenya National Show at Machakos showground. 

Ndeti was impressed by the various value chains and value additions displayed at the show. She expressed particular amazement that coconuts could thrive in Makueni, and stated her intention to promote this value chain through the South Eastern Kenya Economic Bloc (SEKEB).

The four-day event, which started on Wednesday 5th June 2024 features numerous exhibitors showcasing diverse agricultural innovations and technologies under the theme “Promoting Climate-Smart Agriculture and Trade Initiatives for Sustainable Economic Growth.”

Locals benefit from projects of Public Participation

Makueni Deputy Governor Adelina Mwau has implored the locals to make good use of public participation foras to realise development.

The DG particularly called on women to take public participation activities seriously in order to voice out social issues affecting them.

Mwau noted that besides issues of water and health, issues like gender based violence should be articulated saying that public participation provides effective platform for budget allocation.

She said: “Most of the times we prioritise issues of water, health and roads during public participation forums and forget to talk about social issues affecting us like rape and defilement cases. Women should come out in large numbers and speak about these issues so that we can get budget allocation.”

The Deputy Governor spoke on Monday when she commissioned the 80 metre Kalimani drift and Ilikoni ECDE center in Mtito-Andei ward, Kibwezi-East Sub-County, projects which were birthed through public participation. The drift marks a great milestone towards establishing linkages in different areas of the county.

Rose Matheka, one of the project management committee members while lauding the public participation model that starts at the village level, urged the county government to increase the public participation budget, a move that will ensure that many women are facilitated to attend the forums in large numbers.

The roads executive committee member Dr Naomi Makau hailed the PMC for being very vigilant in oversight roles that ensure that effective works are done.

Mtito Andei MCA Francis Mulwa who also took part in unveiling of the projects challenged the youth not to idle around but take up jobs so as to avoid indulging in drugs menace adding that he is in the forefront in steering the youth agenda in the ward.

LOCAL INVESTORS IN WOTE ENGAGE GOVERNOR MUTULA ON THE TOWN’S ECONOMIC GROWTH

A section of local investors and business leaders paid a courtesy call to Governor Mutula Kilonzo Jr, focusing on a discussion to transform Wote into a vibrant economic hub.

The deliberations that centered on town planning, infrastructure development also focused on improved amenities, environmental management and security.

During the meeting, Governor Kilonzo affirmed the county government’s support, urging plot owners to align with the town planning vision to enhance Wote’s appeal as a trading center.

Led by Gideon Kimilu, the business community expressed commitment to boosting investments in the county headquarters.

Further, the governor also highlighted ongoing efforts to improve roads, medical services, water supply and security, ensuring a fair and thriving business environment for all.

Local Farmers Reaping Big through the Adoption of New Technologies in Farming

Over 70% of Makueni farmers supported through the National Agricultural and Rural Inclusive Growth Project (NARIGP) have adopted at least one Technology Innovation and Management Practices (TIMPs) in agricultural production, County Livestock and Cooperative Development Director David Musyoki has revealed.
While interacting with the project County Technical Advisory Committee (CTAC) members, during their 3-day field visits and backstopping exercise, various farmers shared their success  stories of improved livelihoods after adopting best agriculture practices.
 
According to Musyoki, who also chairs CTAC, the committee is responsible for technical advice and quality assurance at the county level.
Many farmers say are now able to afford school fees for their children as well as feed their families during these hard economic  times. These, they attributed to new technologies that have increased production and profitability in agriculture.
 
Some of the TIMPs adopted by farmers are simple chicken feeds formulation and improved feeding, serial hatching, conservation agriculture and mechanization.
 
Others include Integrated Pest Management, climate-smart agronomics practices, flock health management , harvest and post–harvest management.
 
The adoption of new technologies by farmers is expected to shoot up, with the inception of Saccos in the project to assist them access affordable financial resources.

Local farmers benefit from Goat Improvement Program for increased household income

At least 400 farmers from Kikumbulyu South Ward on Wednesday benefited from goat improvement programme that is aimed at increasing milk production and household income.  The initiative involved provision of Galla breeding bucks and does and capacity building of the farmers on best goat management practices. The Galla goats were also vaccinated against Contagious Caprine pleuropneumonia (CCPP) by a Vet doctor before the distribution exercise. 
 
According to livestock and  veterinary experts, the Galla breed has a faster growth rate, has higher market weight and produces higher milk yields, compared to the Small East African Goat, the dominant breed in the ward.
The distribution of the Galla breed was commissioned by Deputy Governor Lucy Mulili who was hosted by Agriculture Executive Joyce Mutua and Area MCA Jades Kalunda at Mkamba cultural Centre in Mikiyuni.
Mulili lauded the initiative and urged the farmers to invest massively in the best breeding practise to improve livelihoods.  Mutua called on Makueni residents to prioritize agriculture, irrigation and livestock projects during this year’s public participation process.
 

LIVESTOCK INSURANCE PROJECT TO PROTECT MAKUENI FARMERS AGAINST DROUGHT RISKS

Farmers in Makueni are set to benefit from insurance project designed to cushion their livestock against drought risks, enhance financial inclusion, and better connect them to markets, says Agriculture Executive Joyce Mutua.

The project allows farmers to insure upto 5 topical livestock units. To be eligible to benefit from financial bonus, farmers must insure at least three tropical livestock units, which is equivalent to three heads of cattle or 30 sheep or goats, at an approximate cost of Sh. 800 per unit. The project will pay 80% of the insurance premiums for the first year while the farmer pays 20 %. Such farmers will receive a one-time savings bonus of Sh. 6000.

The project, named De-Risking, Inclusion, and Value Enhancement (DRIVE), is funded by the World Bank and global risk financing facility and will also focus on promoting key livestock value chains. These include fodder and livestock feed production, livestock trading, commercial off-takes and feed-lotting, livestock transport, extension services, and infrastructure development for value addition such as abotoirs, milk and ghee, tanneries among others.

Registration of animals to be insured will be done in July, paving the way for the project to start in Makueni in October 2024.

 It will target five specific insurance units, validated by key stakeholders last week. These units are:

Athi zone: Covering Mtito-Andei, Masongaleni, Kikumbulyu North and South, parts of Makindu, Nguu-Masumba, and Emali-Mulala wards,

Thwake zone: Covering Kithuki-Kitise, Nzaui-Kilili-Kalamba, Muvau-Kikumini, Kathonzweni, Mavindini and Wote-Nziu wards,

Kalako area: Covering Kalawa and Kako-Waia wards,

Chyullu zone: Covering Ivingoni-Nzambani, Thange, Nguumo, and parts of Makindu wards, and

Konza zone: Covering lower Mbitini, lower Kasikeu, and Kiima-Kiu-Kalanzoni wards.

LIVESTOCK FARMERS BENEFIT FROM FREE VETERINARY MEDICAL CAMP

At least 100 livestock farmers from Kawese Village in Kasikeu Ward have benefited from a free veterinary medical camp aimed at combating diseases exacerbated by recent floods.

The initiative included vaccinations against endemic diseases such as Rift Valley Fever in cattle, sheep, and goats, and Lumpy Skin disease in cattle. Dogs were also vaccinated against rabies to help control dog-mediated human rabies.

In total, 600 cattle, 1200 sheep and goats, and 200 dogs were vaccinated.

Veterinary officers from the Department of Agriculture and Livestock also provided other essential services such as deworming, wound management, and various clinical treatments.

LIGI MASHINANI WARD SPORTS ELECTIONS KICK OFF IN MAKUENI COUNTY

The Department of Gender, Children, Youth, Sports and Social Services has officially launched the Ward Sports Councils’ elections in Muvau/Kikumini Ward, Makueni County, as part of the Ligi Mashinani Programme.

The initiative aims to establish inclusive and democratic sports governance structures at the grassroots level.

The elections, held from sub-ward to ward level, brought together local sports stakeholders to elect officials for key committee positions including Chairperson, Vice Chairperson, Secretary, Treasurer, and representatives for gender, disability, referees, coaches, and athletes.

The exercise was praised for its competitiveness and inclusivity, and will be replicated across all wards in Makueni County over the next two weeks. County Executive Committee Member for Sports, Eng. Sebastian Kyoni, lauded the participants for their dedication and reaffirmed the county administration’s commitment to youth empowerment through sports.

Newly elected committees will oversee sports development, talent nurturing, and athlete representation. Outgoing council members received letters of appreciation from Governor Mutula Kilonzo Jr for their contributions to grassroots sports growth.
