Four Women Self Groups in Makueni County have received a total of KSh 4.7 million to spearhead community-based water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) projects, as part of a broader initiative aimed at promoting climate justice and sustainable resource management.
The funding, provided through the Water Justice Fund from SIMAVI, is being implemented by the Neighbours Initiative Alliance, in collaboration with the Makueni County Government. The project seeks to empower women as key agents in water stewardship through locally led climate adaptations.
As part of the initiative, the women underwent a two-day training focused on building their capacity in WASH and water resource management.
The training equipped participants with practical skills to effectively plan, manage, and sustain water and sanitation efforts in their communities. It also seeks to enhance the role of women in WASH, environmental sanitation, and catchment conservation to support thriving communities.
Four athletes from Makueni County have earned spots on Kenya’s national paravolleyball team that will represent the country at the 2026 International Paravolleyball Championship in China.
The four – Purity Mueni, Florence Manza, Caroline Mueni, and Everline Mutuku—were selected to join the 12-member national squad after delivering standout performances during the national trials held in Wote, Makueni, from Thursday 4th to Saturday 6th December 2025.

Food fortification is the process of adding essential vitamins and minerals to everyday foods to improve health and prevent nutrition-related diseases.
With this in focus, fortifying food has emerged as one of the simplest and most effective ways to curb nutrition-related health risks.
On Friday, the Government of Makueni County in partnership with the Ministry of Health with support from the World Food Programme completed a three-day forum in Machakos to advance new strategies for public awareness on fortified foods.
The discussions that involved officers from Public Health and Agriculture departments focused on helping households, county government leadership and community stakeholders understand the value of consuming nutrient-enhanced foods, especially in preventing hidden hunger and boosting overall health.
During the forum, WFP also trained on sustainable approaches that Makueni can adopt to ensure long-term access and behaviour change on nutritious foods.
Additionally, the partnership aims to equip communities with knowledge that supports healthier, more resilient families.

The Government of Makueni County is making significant strides in strengthening water security through the Financing Locally-Led Climate Action (FLLoCA) Programme, with two major water infrastructure projects nearing completion in Mavindini and Kitise wards.
In Mavindini Ward, the Ksh 13 million Athi–Mavindini Water Project is now 95 percent complete. Once operational, it will benefit more than 6,500 residents by reducing the distance to water sources. The works include construction of a 100m³ sump, rehabilitation of the rising main and water treatment plant, installation of four kilometres of irrigation pipeline with 40 tees, and three kilometres of distribution pipeline. CCTV cameras and security lighting have also been installed to safeguard the facility against vandalism.
In Kitise Ward, construction of the Ksh 15 million Londokwe Earth Dam has reached 92 percent completion under Phase I. The works include excavation of the reservoir, construction of a 180-metre embankment and a 120-metre spillway. Upon completion later this month, the dam will store more than 60,000 cubic metres of water, improving access for domestic use, livestock watering and other livelihood activities.

Residents of Ivingoni/Nzambani and Mtito Andei wards are set to benefit from two water projects under the Financing Locally-Led Climate Action (FLLoCA) Programme, aimed at improving water access while strengthening community resilience to climate change.
On Wednesday, officers from the Makueni County Climate Change Unit officially handed over the project sites to contractors and newly constituted Project Management Committees, paving the way for construction works to begin.
At Kwa Nzoongo in Ivingoni/Nzambani Ward, the County Government will expand and deepen an existing earth dam constructed during Phase I of the programme to enhance rainwater harvesting and storage. The project will also support climate-smart livelihoods through complementary interventions.
In Mtito Andei Ward, the Ngai Ndethya Sand Dam Project will involve raising the weir, laying an 8-kilometre water distribution network, constructing three water kiosks and installing CCTV surveillance to safeguard the solar-powered water pumping system.
Expected to be completed within three months, the projects will provide reliable water for households, livestock and agriculture, improving livelihoods and enhancing climate resilience across the two communities.
Kilungu law courts senior resident magistrate Charles Mayamba has this morning referred five of the 21 suspects who allegedly defiled a 15-year-old pupil in Ilima Ward to different law courts within Makueni County.
Mathew Mumbu, a primary school teacher will on 24th of July 2018 be arraigned in Makindu law courts for the mention while Paul Musau, will have his case mentioned on 26th of this month at Tawa law courts.
Mayamba reported that his decision was arrived at from his previous ruling on the same case where he convicted a man for a life sentence.
‘’It would be detrimental and against the tenets of Justice for me to continue with these cases owing to documented opinion in my judgement in the other cases’’ he said.
Last month the magistrate also convicted a 30-year-old for 80 years in prison for defiling his five-year-old daughter.
Thirteen other suspects accused of defiling the class six pupil on different dates between February and May are still at large and the police are looking for them.
Fida Kenya sent two lawyers to give legal support to the complainant’s case.
Deputy governor Adelina Mwau who has been following the case keenly sat through the proceedings and expressed her satisfaction in the way the case is being handled.
She said that in the past, for years such cases were catching dust under magistrates’ watch while perpetrators roomed free.
‘’We have lost evidence in many cases without proper explanation but we are now registering our satisfaction in the way defilement cases are being handled in Makueni,” Mwau noted.
