KYANGATI-WAUTU WATER PROJECT NEARS COMPLETION

Residents of Ilima Ward will soon enjoy improved water access as the Kyangati-Wautu Water Project nears completion under the Financing Locally-Led Climate Action (FLLoCA) Program.

The project, now 90% complete, was revealed on Tuesday during Governor Mutula Kilonzo Jr. development tour of Ilima Ward.

The project features a sand dam, 17.76 KW solar-powered pumping system, a 100 m³ storage tank, a 2.4 km pipeline network and two community water points.

During the Ward development tour, the governor urged residents to report incidents of water infrastructure vandalism to the appropriate authorities to prevent the misuse of public funds.

This project will serve approximately 1,500 households, schools, markets and churches in the area.

The project is part of a countywide effort to enhance water supply through 12 similar initiatives.

Governor Mutula, accompanied by area MCA Jonathan Muthoka, also visited and inspected the Kiusyi Water Project, which is now 95% complete.

KYANDUU WATER PROJECT TO STRENGTHEN CLIMATE RESILIENCE AND WATER ACCESS IN KEE WARD

The County Government of Makueni has officially handed to a contractor the site for construction of the Kyanduu Integrated Water Project in Kee Ward, funded under the Financing Locally-Led Climate Action (FLLoCA) program.

The project will see the expansion of the existing water pan to increase storage capacity, solar power installation, construction of a masonry distribution tank, three water kiosks, and perimeter fencing to safeguard the water quality. In addition, a climate-smart demonstration farm will be set up to train local farmers on climate-resilient agriculture practices.

Speaking during the handover on Tuesday, Head of the Climate Change Unit, Jackline Kamusa, said the project is a key step in addressing water scarcity while promoting sustainable farming in the community. She added that the initiative also bolsters Governor Mutula Kilonzo Jr’s agenda of achieving universal water coverage across Makueni.

KYANDUU INTEGRATED WATER PROJECT BRINGS CLEAN WATER CLOSER TO KEE WARD RESIDENTS

Residents of Kee Ward are set to benefit from improved access to clean and reliable water following the completion of the Kyanduu Integrated Water Project, a KSh 15 million investment by the Makueni County Government.

The project was implemented under the Financing Locally-Led Climate Action (FLLoCA) Programme and forms part of the county’s broader commitment to locally led climate initiatives aimed at strengthening community resilience and improving livelihoods.

Designed as an integrated intervention, the project combines water, agriculture, and environmental conservation measures to address chronic water scarcity while enhancing climate resilience. Key components include the desilting and expansion of Kyanduu earth dam, installation of a solar-powered pumping system, construction of distribution pipelines, masonry storage tanks, and four water kiosks.

Once fully operational, the project will benefit more than 1,775 residents of Mbakoni, Kavyuni, and Saki villages, providing sustainable water access for domestic use and irrigation, promoting climate-smart agriculture, and supporting environmental conservation.

The initiative also bolsters Makueni County’s Last Mile Water Connectivity Programme spearheaded by Governor Mutula Kilonzo Jr., which seeks to reduce the distance to water sources to less than 2km by 2027.

KWAKYAI VALUE ADDITION TECHNOLOGY STANDS OUT AT THE PRE-MADARAKA FOOD SECURITY EXHIBITION

May 28, 2024

Kwakyai Rural Sacco Limited from Kikumbulyu South is among the over 300 exhibitors showcasing their agricultural technologies at the ongoing Pre-Madaraka Food Security Exhibition at Kibabii University in Bungoma County.

Kwakyai was registered as a Sacco in 2002 with the aim of producing, aggregating, and marketing fruits and vegetables.

However, they faced significant post-harvest losses due to market instability, prompting them to explore value addition. They decided to focus on drying tomatoes.

In 2017, 110 farmers signed a contract with Ketchup, a  Netherlands based company , to supply 10 tons of produce per week. The farmers received a grant of Ksh. 6 million from the Makueni County NARIGP to upgrade their pack house to Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) standards, enabling compliance with export market standards.

This contract has provided the farmers with stable market prices and increased incomes. In 2023, they achieved gross sales of Ksh. 2.7 million from exported tomatoes.

As the Pre-Madaraka Food Security Exhibition continues, various agricultural stakeholders are advocating for a paradigm shift from traditional agriculture to agribusiness and commercialization. Today’s discussions focus on interventions to enhance agricultural production, productivity, and value addition.
