Makueni County has introduced a new digital registration system for suppliers in a bid to streamline operations.

The system is designed to enhance transparency and accountability, with every step being trackable and open to scrutiny.Suppliers can now register from the convenience of their homes or offices, saving valuable time and resources.

The County will benefit from a comprehensive database of suppliers across all categories, leading to informed decision-making and efficient resource allocation.

The digital system also acts as a robust safeguard against corrupt practices, ensuring that only the most qualified and legitimate suppliers are considered for partnerships with the county.

This digital transformation is poised to increase efficiency, promote fair competition, and drive faster economic growth in Makueni County.

Makueni County Report on Groups Mapping

The study found out that majority of the groups (67%) were formed in the last five years and over 70% of the groups registered with the national government, Ministry of East Africa community, Labor and Social Protection. Over 60% of the groups are involved in productive economic activities such as table banking, crop and livestock farming with the rest involved in social welfare activities.

MAKUENI COUNTY REFERRAL HOSPITAL SWITCHES TO SOLAR POWER

By June 2024, Makueni County Referral Hospital will run on solar energy, guaranteeing patients uninterrupted health services even when there are grid electricity power outages.

Energy Chief Officer Eng. Naomi Nthambi on Tuesday launched the solar installation project at the referral hospital hoping to harness 200 Kilowatts at peak working capacity and supplement the grid electricity which is at times unreliable due to outages.

Naomi says this project will save the hospital an estimated Ksh 7 million in annual electricity expenditures.

This project will play a crucial role in reducing carbon emissions while promoting a greener future through investment in renewable energy infrastructure. Successful implementation will also pave way for replication in other county strategic installations.

MAKUENI COUNTY REFERRAL HOSPITAL MAKES MEDICAL HISTORY WITH FIRST-EVER BRAIN TUMOR SURGERY

Makueni County Referral Hospital has successfully performed its first-ever brain tumor surgery, marking a major leap forward in the county’s healthcare capabilities.

The delicate procedure, which took more than six hours, involved the excision of a brain tumor and was led by Consultant Neurosurgeon Dr. Muthoka Mativo, with support from Dr. Angela Murunga.

The patient, 69-year-old male, had been battling persistent migrains and seizures when he sought help at the facility.

After a thorough diagnostic process, doctors recommended immediate surgical intervention, which was successfully performed in the hospital’s main theatre.

MAKUENI COUNTY RECEIVES LABORATORY EQUIPMENT TO BOOST FARM PRODUCE SAFETY

Makueni County has received a donation of advanced laboratory kits to enhance the testing of agricultural produce for safety and quality standards for consumption.

The donation made by Micro-Enterprises Support Programme Trust (MESPT), a public organization that supports small and medium enterprises, is funded by the European Union in partnership with the Danish Embassy (DANIDA).

The equipment that will be used by the county’s agricultural laboratory technical officer includes a milk analyzer, an antibiotic test kit, aflatoxin test kit and computers.

These kits will help detect harmful contaminants in farm produce, which include aflatoxin in maize, pesticide residues in horticultural products, and excess lactose in dairy items.

The donation was officially received by the County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries and Cooperative Development, Joyce Mutua.

Mutua expressed appreciation for the support, noting that the new lab equipment will play a crucial role in safeguarding public health and improving the quality of agricultural products in the county.

The county collaboration with MESPT aims to strengthen agricultural value chains, providing agribusiness with the tools and resources needed to meet commercial standards and enhance the safety of food products.

Makueni County Prepares for the Roll Out of Indigenous Knowledge Documentation and Digitization Project.

A delegation from the State Department of Culture and Heritage, Ministry of Tourism, Wildlife and Heritage led by Dr. Evans Taracha, the National Coordinator of the Natural Products Industry (NPI) Initiative and leader of the indigenous knowledge documentation and digitization project, met with the Makueni County project implementation team led by Peter Mumo Nyamai, the County Executive Committee Member for Trade, Industry, Marketing, Culture and Tourism, to plan for the roll out of the project.
The overall goal of the project is to advance protection, promotion and valorization (value addition) of Kenya’s indigenous knowledge and associated assets. The project will support the County government in meeting its obligations in the Protection of Traditional Knowledge and Cultural Expressions Act, 2016 by setting up the County digital repository of traditional knowledge and cultural expressions and associated ICT equipment and building capacity of the County government in the documentation and digitization of indigenous knowledge.
The pilot project that is implemented in Makueni County under the Department of Trade, Marketing, Industry, Culture and Tourism is spearheaded by the Ministry of Tourism, Wildlife and Heritage through the Natural Products Industry (NPI) Initiative, a Kenya Vision 2030 flagship project. It is envisaged that the project will stimulate a new growth area of the economy that harnesses indigenous knowledge and associated assets.

MAKUENI COUNTY PARTNERS WITH VITAMIN ANGELS TO FIGHT MALNUTRITION AND TEEN PREGNANCIES.

Makueni County has signed a landmark Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Africa Vitamin Angels, a global nonprofit health organization, to introduce Multiple Micronutrient Supplements (MMS) aimed at combating malnutrition among women and children.

Through this new partnership, Makueni becomes the first county in Kenya to pilot the World Health Organization (WHO)-recommended MMS program, targeting micronutrient deficiencies in pregnant women.

The initiative will take an implementation science approach, enabling the county’s technical working group, in collaboration with Vitamin Angels, to generate local data and strategies for scaling the program effectively.

Dr. Lucy Kanya, Senior Regional Technical Director at Vitamin Angels, applauded Makueni’s proactive approach, calling the partnership a significant step forward in maternal and child health.

She also reaffirmed Vitamin Angels’ commitment to addressing adolescent pregnancy, a major contributor to premature births.

Governor Mutula Kilonzo Jr., who presided over the MoU signing, hailed the initiative as a “God-sent opportunity,” especially as anaemia rates in the county remain high at 47%.

He urged both Vitamin Angels and other stakeholders to prioritize efforts to reduce teenage pregnancies, which he described as a “silent national pandemic.”
