Makueni Hawkers Redefining Wealth Creation By Ordinary Folk

In 2015, the Makueni County Government spearheaded formation of the Makueni Hawkers Sacco bringing together all hawkers based in the county.

The Sacco, with 1,500 members then, was registered in February the same year and awarded two lorries as seed capital to ease transportation of their merchandise and to enhance wealth creation.

With a monthly savings of at least Sh 120,000 a month, and a membership of 2051 as of today, the Sacco has acquired a new lorry, and aims at acquiring three more such that each sub-county chapter has its own.

The new lorry was unveiled on Wednesday by governor Kivutha Kibwana, who pledged his government’s support in the acquisition of the planned trucks.

The Sacco, which has also ventured into loaning its members, had a loan portfolio of Sh 4.6 million as of December 30th 2018 audit report.

The Sacco, according to its leadership, also intends to venture into real estate development and water hawking through purchase of a water bowser as ways of business diversification.

MAKUENI HAS RELEASED 100 YOUNG PEOPLE TO THE JOB MARKET AFTER A YEAR-LONG HANDS-ON TRAINING THROUGH INTERNSHIPS.

The interns were placed in different county departments immediately after graduation to hone their skills and prepare for career progression.

Before their exit, the interns were on Thursday taken through a mentorship exercise including idea pitching, presentation skills, and mental health counselling.

County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for ICT,  Education, and Internship Elizabeth Muli presided over the event held at the Makueni Integrated Vocational Empowerment Center.

Present also was CECM Lands, CECM Trade the chief officer of Education, and the Internship and Mentorship directorate who shared words of wisdom with the hopeful professionals. 

MAKUENI HAS PARTNERED WITH HOPE MOBILITY KENYA TO ASSES AND PROVIDE MOBILITY DEVICES TO PHYSICALLY CHALLENGED PEOPLE IN THE COUNTY.

Through a collaboration framework signed by Governor Mutula Kilonzo Jnr and Hope Mobility Kenya Executive Director Jack Muthui Tuesday, those living with disabilities will undergo proper diagnosis to identify their challenges and receive appropriate assistive devices.

Governor Mutula is upbeat this will bring hope to physically challenged people who are often shunned by society and miss life growth opportunities.

The signing was witnessed by Gender and Social Services Executive Committee Member Nicholas Nzioka and Chief Officer Catherine Katuti, director of Gender Services and the county Disability Mainstreaming Officer.

The initiative targets 40,000 learners across the county.

MAKUENI HAS INKED A DEAL WITH VILLAGE ENTERPRISE, A NON-GOVERNMENTAL ORGANIZATION KEEN ON ERADICATING EXTREME POVERTY IN RURAL COMMUNITIES TO IMPLEMENT JOINT INITIATIVES TOWARDS EXTREME POVERTY ERADICATION IN MAKUENI.

Makueni has inked a deal with Village Enterprise, a Non-Governmental Organization keen on eradicating extreme poverty in rural communities to implement joint initiatives towards extreme poverty eradication in Makueni. The initiatives aimed at financial inclusion equips first-time entrepreneurs with resources and skills to start climate-smart businesses and savings groups.

The deal was signed by GovernoMutula Kilonzo Jr and Taddeo Muriuki – Chief Government Relations Officer for Village Enterprise, in Wote, Tuesday

MAKUENI HANDS OVER SITES FOR ESP MARKETS

Makueni County has handed over three sites for construction of ultra-modern markets under the Multi-million Economic Stimulus Program (ESP), a partnership between the national government and county governments.

The sites handed over on Wednesday to contractors procured by the State Department for Housing and Urban Development are Makindu ( Kibwezi West) and Kikima (Mbooni). Kasikeu site in Kilome was handed over on Tuesday by Deputy Governor Lucy Mulili.

The Ksh 50M each markets are meant to spur rural economic growth by promoting Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises.

Each market will accomodate 200 traders. Some of their essential componets are lactating rooms, cold storage rooms, SACCO offices, an ICT hub, ATM booths, a social hall, and a kitchen.

Makueni, GVRC hold sensitization fora to address Gender Based Violence in the county

The County Government of Makueni in partnership with Gender Violence Recovery Centre(GRVC) of Nairobi Women’s Hospital on Monday kicked off gender based violence sensitization program in a bid to address sexual and other forms of GBV in the county.

This is in accordance to a Memorandum of Understanding which was signed by the two parties last month to partner to develop, promote and strengthen joint actions and collaboration towards prevention and response to GBV within Makueni County.

The sensitization program which will run in every sub-county across the county is targeting duty bearers and anti-GBV champions in every ward in order to capacity build them.

Speaking during the forum, Makueni Deputy Governor Adelina Mwau said that the county is in the forefront in the fight against GBV which is on increase adding that they were going to bring on board all key stakeholders in order to effectively address the issue.

“GBV cases have increased tremendously and as we fight it, we are planning to bring on board other key stakeholders so that we can work together towards addressing this sensitive issue. It is so shocking that in January we had 21 cases of pregnancies for school going girls in Kibwezi only,” Mwau stated.

Kibwezi-East Sub-County Education Director Kennedy Machora said that they were working closely with all relevant bodies to ensure that all perpetrators of GBV are brought to book.

The county government has established a Makueni Gender Based Recovery Center at Wote Referral hospital to enhance comprehensive management of GBV services and strengthen functional referral mechanisms.

MAKUENI GOVERNOR TOUTS MAJOR WATER GAINS, SECURES KSH 150M FOR CLIMATE RESILIENCE

Makueni Governor used Jamhuri Day celebrations at Kikima Secondary School to highlight sweeping gains in water access and environmental restoration, calling them the backbone of a “humane government that dignifies its people.”

He announced that Makueni is among only three counties selected for the KSh130 million K-WASH programme after developing a county water and sanitation strategy. Kibwezi–Makindu Water Company also qualified for an additional KSh37 million and was recognized for financial reporting excellence.

The governor cited major projects now delivering clean water to households, including the KSh68 million Athi–Kilema–Tunguni system serving 42,500 homes, the nearly complete Kalawa AKWASH project, and the ongoing Kiboko–Twaandu line targeting 1,000 more households. He said partnerships with World Vision and WHH are rehabilitating old water schemes and extending supply to underserved villages.

In a fresh environmental push, Makueni has secured KSh150 million from the World Bank under the Kenya Watershed Services Improvement Programme (KEWASIP) to restore degraded landscapes, strengthen water security and build climate resilience.

The governor urged residents, youth and community leaders to join restoration efforts, saying, “Together we shall build a Makueni where no child goes thirsty and where nature and people thrive in harmony.”

MAKUENI GOVERNOR MUTULA KILONZO JUNIOR TODAY RECEIVED THE HUDUMA OMBUDSMAN AWARD

Makueni Governor Mutula Kilonzo Junior today received the HUDUMA OMBUDSMAN AWARD from the Makueni County Assembly Majority Leader Kyalo Mumo who took it on his behalf during the 4th Edition of the awards ceremony days ago.

The Governor won in the UGATUZI CATEGORY where he was recognised for LEVERAGING ON TECHNOLOGY AND INNOVATION FOR ENHANCED TRANSPARENCY AND SOCIAL ACCOUNTABILITY.

This recognition affirms the Governors efforts on ICT integration in all county services.
