๐๐จ๐ญ๐, ๐๐ซ๐ ๐๐๐ฉ๐ญ๐๐ฆ๐๐๐ซโMakueni County is moving to give military veterans a greater role in local development, with Governor Mutula Kilonzo Jr. signalling plans for closer cooperation with the influential group, while supporting their welfare.
Speaking at the inaugural Makueni Military Veterans Annual General Meeting, Mutula said the county was preparing a Memorandum of Understanding to formalise cooperation with veterans, potentially expanding their role in county programmes and public affairs, noting their untapped skills.
The meeting addressed healthcare, family welfare, insurance, financial discipline, economic empowerment and drug abuse, highlighting issues affecting veterans and their families.
Military Veterans Association Director Brigadier (Rtd) Moses Reriari urged the county to recognise veterans as a resource in public development, citing their skills and expertise in engineering, plant operations, health and environmental conservation, among other disciplines.
Mutula said veterans would support health, Disaster Management, agriculture, Environmental conservation and water programmes while benefiting from economic empowerment and value-chain opportunities, positioning the partnership as part of the countyโs broader development agenda.
The county also plans to document veteransโ history and contributions, a move aimed at preserving Makueniโs military heritage while giving the group a more visible place in the countyโs public life.
Digital Innovation Challenge. 2026
Under the IFSL-Makueni project, funded by BRC-Kenya, ICHA and Digital Transformation are launching a Digital Innovation Challenge for community innovators from the Lower Eastern Region. The two funded solutions will ultimately boost the project’s efforts to enhance food security and livelihoods in Makueni County.

The engagement underscored the Governorโs commitment to people-centred leadership, responsive governance, and inclusive development, as residents shared their concerns while the Governor and his team listened, assessed the needs on the ground, and discussed practical interventions.
Water and healthcare emerged as key priorities, with the Governor commissioning the rehabilitated Kitise Water Project and inspecting the ongoing construction of the Londokwe Dam, a flagship project expected to strengthen water access and support the socio-economic development of the area.
The Governor also announced plans for the construction of a modern market at Kitise, a move aimed at creating a better trading environment, supporting local businesses, and expanding economic opportunities for residents.
The tour reflects a development approach anchored on listening to citizens, identifying local priorities, investing in critical infrastructure, and delivering projects that improve livelihoods.

Kilonzo also directed the connection of water to the facility and ordered the provision of maternity and laboratory equipment, while pledging to ensure the Londokwe Dam project is completed before the onset of the rains.
He further announced 72 bicycles for Community Health Promoters to ease transport challenges and support their work.
The governor is touring Kitise-Kithuki Ward to meet residents, inspect ongoing projects and commission completed ones.

Makueni Governor Mutula Kilonzo Jr has commissioned the rehabilitated Kitise Water Project at Katangini in Kitise-Kithuki Ward, marking a major step towards improving access to clean and reliable water in the area.
The project comprises more than 12 kilometres of rising main, over 25 kilometres of distribution lines, a water treatment plant at Katangini, and 250-cubic-metre masonry storage tanks at Yikitise Primary School. It also includes booster stations at Katangini and Mbata Markets.
The project has provided connections to 27 institutions, 168 individual households and 16 water kiosks, benefiting more than 11,000 people across the area.
Speaking during the commissioning, Governor Kilonzo said the project would not only improve access to clean water but also help reduce the need for residents to venture into crocodile-infested areas in search of water, thereby easing the risk of rampant crocodile attacks.
The Governor was joined by Makueni County Assembly Speaker Douglas Mbilu, Clerk Kevin Mutuku and several Members of the County Assembly (MCAs).

Governor Mutula Kilonzo Jr. on Wednesday morning hosted the National Land Commission (NLC), led by Chairperson Abdullahi Alawy, during a courtesy call held on the sidelines of the Commission’s public participation forum on the Draft Historical Land Injustices Regulations, 2026.
The meeting focused on strengthening collaboration between the County Government and the NLC to resolve long-standing land injustices affecting residents of Makueni, some of which date back to the early years of Kenya’s independence.
Among the key issues agreed for fast-tracked action are:
Kwitu Kinyoo Community land claim involving Ukambani Agricultural Institute (UKAI), South Eastern Kenya University (SEKU) and others.
Katende Forest Squatters land claim involving the Kenya Forest Service (KFS).
Chyulu Hills Squatters and Chyulu Hills/Mikululo Evictees land claims involving the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS).
Claims by Mulima and Manooni Dam Project Affected Persons.
Land tenure regularization under the Kenya Informal Settlements Improvement Programme (KISIP) for plots in Emali, Mtito Andei, Kathonzweni and Wote.
Regularization of public institutions and utilities occupying public land within Wote.
Compensation for affected persons under the Kwa Mbila Dam Project.
Fast-tracking compensation for landowners affected by the Thwake Dam, KibweziโKitui Road and Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) projects.
Governor Mutula reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to working closely with the National Land Commission and all relevant agencies to ensure justice for affected communities, safeguard land rights and accelerate the resolution of historical land disputes that have remained unresolved for decades.

The Governor said the project is a priority for his administration, noting that the community has endured water shortages for far too long. He directed the construction team to ensure the dam is completed before the onset of the anticipated El Niรฑo rains.
The project has been prioritized to enhance water storage for domestic and livestock use while strengthening the communityโs resilience to drought. The dam has a planned storage capacity of more than 240,000 cubic metres and is expected to benefit approximately 10,500 people across the wider area.

The County Government of Makueni, through the Department of Gender, Children, Youth, Sports and Social Services, on Saturday helped organise friendly football matches bringing together five granniesโ teams: Wote, Kilala, Preciousโ Kikumbukyu, Maiani and Vumbu Grannies.
The matches provided the elderly women with an opportunity to stay physically active, improve their health, socialise and enjoy sports in an inclusive environment.
Speaking during the event, Interim Chairperson of the Makueni Grannies Football Association, Mary Kioko, said the associationโs theme, โKICK FOR HEALTH,โ highlights the role of sports in promoting the physical and social wellbeing of elderly women.
Kioko called for increased support in uniforms, sporting facilities, financial assistance and inclusion of grannies in tournaments.
The County Government provided medical support, refreshments and technical facilitation during the matches.
The initiative reflects Governor Mutula Kilonzo Juniorโs commitment to empowering women while prioritising their health, dignity and wellbeing at every stage of life.

Kalonzo, who addressed a rally in Emali, is touring Makueni, Kajiado and Taita Taveta counties as the Wiper Patriotic Front steps up its grassroots mobilisation ahead of the 2027 General Election.
The former Vice-President was accompanied by DAP-K leader Eugene Wamalwa, Democratic Party leader Justin Bedan Muturi, Kitui Senator Enoch Wambua, Machakos Senator Agnes Kavindu and other leaders.
The leaders are expected to meet residents across the three counties, listen to their concerns and mobilise support for the Wiper Patriotic Front.
Addressing the Emali rally, Kalonzo urged residents to ensure they have valid identification documents and voter registration cards ahead of the elections.
He also thanked Makueni leaders for remaining active in serving residents, as he sought to consolidate support in the region.
