HEALTH SERVICES ECM COMMENDS PROGRESS ON MBOONI SUB- COUNTY EMERGENCY FACILITY

Makueni ECM in charge of Health Services, Joyce Mutua, on Wednesday conducted an unannounced visit to Mbooni Sub-County Hospital to evaluate the facility’s service delivery and inspect progress on the construction of a new modern emergency and family hospital.

During the visit, the ECM interacted with patients seeking medical care and took note of ongoing operations within the hospital.

She expressed satisfaction with the pace of construction, noting that the upcoming facility—expected to be completed later this year—will significantly enhance emergency response capacity and improve overall healthcare services for residents of Mbooni and surrounding areas.

The visit also reaffirmed the department’s commitment to strengthening healthcare systems across the county.

She emphasized her dedication to supporting Governor Mutula Kilonzo Jr.’s vision of accessible and quality healthcare for all Makueni residents.

HEALTH EXPERTS PARTNER TO COMBAT RABIES AND YELLOW FEVER IN MAKUENI COUNTY

The Department of Health Services has partnered with researchers from the University of Nairobi, KU Leuven (Belgium), and the Global Alliance for Rabies Control (GARC) to engage stakeholders in developing innovative approaches to prevent rabies and yellow fever.

Makueni County is among the regions with a high burden of rabies, a vaccine-preventable zoonotic viral disease that affects the central nervous system.

As part of this collaboration, the department hosted a consultative meeting on Monday,employing participatory research methods to allow stakeholders to share diverse perspectives. These contributions will play a pivotal role in shaping policies aimed at mitigating rabies and yellow fever in the county.

Additionally, field visits will be conducted in selected healthcare facilities within the county to assess the prevalence of rabies and gather further insights for intervention strategies.

HEALTH DEPARTMENT MOVES TO STRENGTHEN SERVICES AT KIBWEZI LEVEL 4 HOSPITAL

The Department of Health has reaffirmed its commitment to improving service delivery at Kibwezi Level 4 Hospital following an inspection visit by County Executive Committee Member for Health, Joyce Mutua, and the County Health Management Team.

The visit focused on assessing the hospital’s capacity to effectively serve residents of Kibwezi East and to enhance its ability to respond to emergency cases along the busy Mombasa Road corridor.

The team also emphasized the importance of prioritizing critical and high-demand medical commodities to maintain consistent and efficient service delivery.

Acting Chief Officer for Health Services, Dr. Geoffrey Ngovi, lauded the hospital’s management for its teamwork and operational efficiency.

County Director of Health, Dr. Mwatha, also underscored the need to ensure emergency supplies remain adequately stocked to support lifesaving interventions.

HEALTH DEPARTMENT HOLDS FREE MEDICAL CAMP AT NGAKAA HEALTH FACILITY

The Department of Health Services on Saturday held a successful medical camp at Ngakaa Health Facility, offering free treatment and medication to hundreds of residents.

Community members received care for a range of health concerns, including hypertension, diabetes, and other common ailments. The initiative was part of the county’s ongoing efforts to expand access to quality healthcare at the grassroots level.

Speaking during the event, Chief Officer for Health Services, Dr. Harvey Mulei, encouraged residents to turn up for the upcoming public participation forums on the Mutula Care program, which is set for implementation soon. He emphasized that community involvement is key to shaping healthcare services that meet people’s needs.

The camp was also attended by Kibwezi West Sub-County Medical Officer of Health, Dr. Patrick Kibwana, and Makindu Medical Superintendent, Emmanuel Leiposha, who joined the medical team in supporting the exercise.

The health department has pledged to continue organizing such outreach programs to bring essential services closer to the people.

HEALTH COVERAGE PROGRAMME WINS PUBLIC CONFIDENCE

In Ngoni Cluster, Muloko Nzangi shared her family’s painful journey of caring for her ailing husband, who has sought treatment at Mbumbuni, Wote, and Kenyatta National Hospital.

The prolonged struggle forced the family to sell most of their valuable property to meet mounting medical costs.

She described the Makueni Universal Health Coverage programme as a timely intervention capable of restoring dignity and stability to families burdened by illness and debt.

According to Nzangi, the initiative offers hope not only to her household but also to many others silently struggling across the county.

Residents of Kakuswi and Ngoni Clusters commended the county’s health financing programme, describing it as a key flagship project for the 2026/2027 financial year.

HEALTH CECM LEADS SUPERVISION MISSION AT MAKINDU HOSPITAL, PLEDGES SERVICE IMPROVEMENTS

The County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Health Services Joyce Mutua on Wednesday led a supervision mission to Makindu Sub-County Hospital, aimed at assessing operational challenges and reaffirming the department’s commitment to enhancing service delivery.

Makindu Sub-County Hospital serves patients from across the region, including neighbouring counties of Machakos, Kitui, and Taita Taveta. The facility is particularly known for handling a high number of accident-related fracture cases, making it a critical referral centre for trauma care.

In a major boost to healthcare services, the hospital is set to introduce dialysis services, a development that will ease the burden on patients who previously had to seek the service in Wote or at Kenyatta National Hospital.

The CECM, accompanied by Chief Officers Dr. Harvey Mulei (Human Resource) and Irene Makau (Health Services), commended the hospital staff for their dedication and tireless efforts in ensuring patients receive quality care despite few existing challenges.

She reaffirmed the county’s commitment to strengthening the facility to meet the growing demand for specialized and efficient healthcare services.

HEALTH CECM LEADS MATERNAL HEALTH CAMPAIGN IN KIBWEZI EAST.

Women in Kibwezi East have been urged to deliver in health facilities to reduce the risk of postpartum hemorrhage, a leading cause of maternal complications.

The call was made during a meeting at Kibwezi East Sub-County Hospital, which brought together more than 300 women for a maternal health sensitization forum.

Health CECM Joyce Mutua emphasized the importance of skilled birth attendance and cautioned mothers against the harmful practice of gum cutting on infants.

She further encouraged women to embrace modern contraceptives to support healthy spacing, safer pregnancies, and improved outcomes for both mothers and babies.

Mutua also announced an upcoming maternity block at the facility which will significantly expand maternal and newborn care capacity, ease congestion, and enhance access to quality services for mothers in Kibwezi East and surrounding areas.

The hospital also hosted over 100 bodaboda riders as part of a “men in maternity” engagement, urging them to actively support pregnant women, particularly by facilitating timely transport to health facilities.

The riders later led members of the public to a blood donation drive organized by the hospital to help bolster blood supplies for women experiencing postpartum hemorrhage.

Masongaleni Ward MCA Brian Nzoka noted the critical role bodaboda operators play in maternal health and called for their continued involvement in community health initiatives.

Health Cabinet Secretary Susan Nakhumicha visits Makueni County Referral Hospital dialysis and maternity wings during her UHC spot check tour. Makueni has shifted focus to preventive healthcare (Primary healthcare and community health strategy). This seeks to reach all residents wherever they are, their social and economic status notwithstanding.

Wote Municipality is set for exponential growth with more devolved functions and resources to offer services.

 

In an introductory meeting between the Municipality Board and the new Governor H.E Mutula Kilonzo Jnr, Monday, a consensus was reached to transfer all the necessary functions from the County Government to the Municipality and the requisite resources to follow those functions.

 

Gazettement of the functions to be transferred to the Municipality is expected to be done within this month.

 

Governor Kilonzo Junior also met officials from the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) for a planning meeting on Digital Land Governance Programme.

The programme, funded by European Union and FAO is geared towards improved food and nutrition security, livelihoods and sustainable development through equitable and secure access and management of land.

This will be achieved through:

  1. Enhanced efficient and effective land governance through the digitization and digitalization of land records and processes.
  2. Improved conflicts and disputes resolution mechanisms on land and natural resources.
  3. Improved and inclusive policy, legal and institutional frameworks
