MKJ SUPA CUP TOURNAMENT KICKS OFF

Makueni’s premier sports tournament, MKJ Supa Cup, has kicked off at the sub-county level, bringing together all-star ward teams drawn from the recently concluded Ligi Mashinani tournament to battle for a place in the county finals.

The kick-off matches were held in Kilome and Makueni sub-counties, while Mbooni, Kibwezi East, Kibwezi West and Kaiti sub-counties will compete on 21st March 2026.

The tournament, which features football, volleyball, basketball and handball for both men and women teams, provides youth aged under 23 with an opportunity to showcase their talents and leverage possible recruitment opportunities into elite teams both nationally and internationally.

Governor Mutula Kilonzo Jr. flagged off the Makueni Sub-county finals at Kathonzweni AIC Grounds on Saturday. Deputy Governor Lucy Mulili and Sports CECM Eng. Sebastian Kyoni graced the Kilome Sub-county finals at Enzai in Mukaa.

Governor Mutula said his administration has incorporated scouts from various national sports federations into the tournament to help identify outstanding talents who can join national clubs and commercialize their sporting abilities.

After the county finals, an all-star team will be selected to represent Makueni at the Kenya Inter-County Sports Association (KYISA) Games scheduled to take place in Laikipia County next month.

KYONI LEADS MWANYANI COMMUNITY IN GREENING MAKUENI CHILD RESCUE CENTRE

Executive Committee Member for Gender, Children, Youth, Sports and Social Services, Eng. Sebastian Kyoni, on Saturday led the Mwanyani community of Emali-Mulala Ward in a greening exercise at the Makueni County Child Rescue Centre.

The exercise was aimed at establishing a child-friendly, environmentally sustainable and conducive environment that supports the healing and well-being of children hosted at the centre.

A total of 300 seedlings comprising ornamental, indigenous and fruit trees were planted. The fruit trees will play a key role in improving nutrition for the children.

The centre, which only awaits gazettement, will serve as a street children rescue and rehabilitation facility.

The exercise was also championed by ChildFund, Dedicated Children Agency, and Eco Green Initiative.

MAKUENI MARKS MORTICIANS RECOGNITION DAY, HONOURS VITAL ROLE IN HEALTHCARE

The Department of Health Services on Friday joined mortuary professionals in commemorating Morticians Recognition Day at the Mother and Child Hospital in Wote, in an event that celebrated the often unseen yet critical role morticians play within the healthcare system.

Held under the theme “Honouring the Departed, Healing the Living,” the event recognized the dedication of morticians in preserving the dignity of the deceased while providing essential support to families during moments of grief.

Speaking on behalf of County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Health Services Joyce Mutua, CECM for Lands, Urban Planning and Development, Environment and Climate Change Dr. Paul Musila said the county government has taken deliberate steps to improve the welfare of mortuary staff.

He noted that the county has transitioned morticians who were previously serving on contract terms to permanent and pensionable employment, a move aimed at enhancing job security and motivation among the professionals.

Further, he highlighted ongoing efforts to strengthen mortuary services across the county, including the construction of a new mortuary facility with a capacity of about 100 bodies, as well as equipping health facilities to improve service delivery.

National Chairperson of the Morticians and Allied Professionals Association of Kenya, Elkanah Mwinami, emphasized the commitment of mortuary professionals to uphold respect and dignity in handling the deceased.

He said morticians play a vital role not only in preserving the dignity of the departed but also in offering comfort and reassurance to bereaved families during their most difficult moments.

MAKUENI ATC, KWAKATHOKA MARKS ST GRADUATION

Seventy-two graduands were on Thursday awarded certificates during the inaugural graduation ceremony of the Makueni Agricultural Training Centre (MATC) at Kwakathoka, marking a significant milestone in strengthening agricultural skills in the county.

The ceremony, led by Deputy Governor H.E. Lucy Mulili, saw the trainees graduate in Dairy Farm Management, Poultry Kienyeji Production, and Horticulture Production.

The training combines school-based learning with field-based practical sessions and is examined and certified under the TVET Curriculum Development, Assessment and Certification Council (TVET CDACC), with support from development partners.

Mulili encouraged the graduands to put the knowledge and skills acquired into practice to unlock opportunities for economic empowerment.

The event was attended by Agriculture Ag. CECM Damaris Kavoi, Chief Officers Felistus Mutune and Japheth Kiminza, County Agriculture Sectoral Committee members and partners.

The ceremony also recognized 21 farmer groups comprising 507 farmers who completed field-based training in agricultural production, further strengthening Makueni’s vision of becoming a hub of skilled and knowledgeable farmers.

GOVERNOR MUTULA URGES LOCAL COMMUNITIES’ ROLE IN LOGGING DECISIONS

Governor Mutula has called for the active involvement of local communities in decisions regarding logging in Makueni County.

His remarks follow a recent motion by the Makueni County Assembly to immediately freeze all commercial and large‑scale logging activities in public forests within the county.

Speaking in Winzeni, Mbooni Ward, while condoling with the family of Josephine Musyoki, Governor Mutula also announced that the county government has allocated KSh 20 million to equip the newly completed Mbooni Emergency and Family Hospital.

BOOSTING WATER SECURITY IN MAKUENI COUNTY

In a continued effort to strengthen water security and empower communities, Makueni County has donated water tanks to eight women’s groups under the Path From Poverty Organisation.

The organisation, which brings together 4,600 women, has already supported 1,600 families across the county with water tanks, helping households harvest and store water for domestic use and livelihood activities.

The beneficiary groups which received the water tanks from Governor Mutula Kilonzo Jr. include: Lucky Kithuiani, Neema Uthiuni, Muuo wa Kinyee SHG, Umu Village SHG, Mbumye Mutoma Muongo, Uumwe wa Kyawandii, Ngwate Kwoko, and Kyeni Kya Yatwa B.

MAKUENI MARKS WORLD KIDNEY DAY 2026.

The Department of Health Services on Thursday joined the rest of the world in commemorating World Kidney Day 2026 at Green Park in Wote.

The event, themed “Kidney Health for All: Caring for People, Protecting the Environment,” was led by a team of medical professionals from the Makueni County Referral Hospital.

During the event, the team conducted free kidney screenings and delivered health talks aimed at raising awareness about kidney health and the importance of early detection.

Speaking at the event, the nurse in charge of the MCRH Renal Department, Christine Andrew, encouraged residents to adopt simple but effective practices to protect their kidneys and prevent complications.

GOVERNOR MUTULA PLEDGES MORE FUNDING TO EXPAND HUDUMA MASHINANI PROGRAM

Governor Mutula Kilonzo Jr. has announced that his administration will increase annual budgetary allocations to strengthen the Huduma Mashinani Program, an initiative aimed at bringing government services closer to the grassroots.

Speaking on Thursday while hosting Huduma Kenya Chief Executive Officer Benjamin Chilumo to review the implementation of the program in Makueni, Governor Mutula termed the initiative a game changer that has revolutionized the delivery of government services.

So far, 63,000 residents across 23 wards have benefited from the program, accessing 23 different services such as birth and death certificates, SHA registration, groups registration, IEBC voter registration, driving licences, civil marriage registration, and certificates of good conduct, among others.

Mr. Chilumo pledged continued support for the county government, including the establishment of dedicated Huduma Kenya service desks within county government installations, where the requisite facilities will be provided to facilitate service delivery.

County Assembly Speaker Douglas Mbilu reaffirmed Governor Mutula’s call for increased budgetary support, noting that the program has saved residents the cost and inconvenience of traveling long distances to access government services.

GOVERNOR MUTULA, HUDUMA KENYA CEO LEAD HUDUMA MASHINANI OUTREACH IN KATHONZWENI

A total of 3,008 residents of Kathonzweni Ward on Thursday accessed vital government services during the Huduma Mashinani outreach held at Mbuvo Market.

This brings to 66,000 the number of residents who have benefitted from the program across 24 wards, as the Government of Makueni County continues to devolve service delivery closer to the grassroots.

The exercise was graced by Governor Mutula Kilonzo Jr. and Huduma Kenya Chief Executive Officer CPA Benjamin Chilumo, underscoring the strong partnership between the County Government of Makueni and Huduma Kenya in enhancing grassroots service delivery.

The two leaders committed to further strengthen the program through increased financial, material, and human resource allocation to ensure more residents benefit. They also noted that additional services will be introduced to complement the 23 services currently offered under the program.
